Why Read Scivias?
Scivias is St. Hildegard of Bingen’s first major visionary work and one of the great spiritual texts of the medieval Church. Its title comes from the Latin Sci vias Domini, “Know the ways of the Lord,” and across its twenty-six visions Hildegard unfolds a sweeping vision of creation, the human person, sin and redemption, the Church, the sacraments, virtue, judgment, and the destiny of the soul in God. Rich with striking imagery and theological depth, Scivias is not simply a record of mystical experiences, but a guide to seeing reality more clearly: how God orders creation, how the body and soul belong together, how sin distorts that order, and how Christ restores the human person to life, harmony, and holiness.
